Self-sustaining branch receives LEED Platinum certification

HVB branch at Arabella Park has been certified “especially sustainable”

The Self Sustaining Branch (SSB) is UniCredit’s initiative for building a network of energetically largely autonomous branch buildings in the countries where the group has operations.

The Arabella Park branch is the first UniCredit branch to gain LEED Platinum certification, which confirms that it satisfies the highest internationally known standard for environmentally friendly, resource-efficient and sustainable building.

The classification of sustainable buildings according to the American LEED system has become quite common for new buildings in Germany. However, it is rather rare for energetically refurbished old buildings to seek certification. Only few such structures have received the coveted medal to date.

Energy-efficient buildings are the most important aspect in achieving sustainability in banking operations. Therefore, we systematically consider energy and resource efficiency, material ecology and health aspects in our construction and renovation projects, as well as the operation of our buildings.

This philosophy is complemented by the installation of an electric car charging station at the Arabellastrasse branch, which is also the base module for the bank’s “electric mobility” pilot. If the field test is a success, electric vehicles could in future be tested as part of a sustainable fleet management concept.

The self-sufficient branch is thus a contribution to UniCredit’s banking concept based entirely on sustainability aspects.

Redevelopment of the Arabella Park branch

 As part of the energy-efficient redevelopment, many individual measures were taken in 2012 to renovate the building shell and building services. The roof-mounted photovoltaic system covers about 24% of the branch’s power needs of the branch. The heating consumption, too, is now about 50% lower than before. This is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 9 tons / year.

The following measures were implemented:
-       New façade in the form of a non-bearing, rear-ventilated construction with reinforced insulation
-       Exchange and replacement of all windows (triple glazing, UV protection glazing in the entrance area)
-       Insulation of the walls in the basement
-       Optimisation of the building services, including installation of LED lighting, ventilation system with heat recovery, water-saving devices, etc.
The interior of the branch also corresponds to the bank’s newly developed branch concept.

In summary, the branch is a pilot project in many ways:
-       First self-sustaining branch in Germany
-       HypoVereinsbank’s first green building
-       One of the first branches with the new interior concept
-       The first branch with a photovoltaic system
-       The first branch with e-car infrastructure

-       Energy savings on heating: 40,000 kWh per year (about 50% of consumption to date)
-       Energy savings on power: 1,500 kWh per year (approx. 5% of consumption to date)
-       Estimated CO2 reduction: about 9 tons per year
